Doosan Portable Power Prepares for Tier 4 Compliance with Cummins
June 25th 2012Doosan Infracore Portable Power has selected Cummins Engine Group to provide diesel engines for its portable generator line in anticipation of Tier 4 emission regulations that require a further 90 percent reduction in particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions over previous requirements.
Currently, Tier 4 is the strictest Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions requirement for off-highway diesel engines. The regulations set specific limits on the amount of pollutants that can be released into the environment. The requirements are part of the federal Clean Air Act whose purpose is to reduce air pollution because of its hazards to human health and the environment. In May 2004, as part of its Clean Diesel Program, the EPA finalized a comprehensive rule to reduce emissions from non-road diesel engines by integrating engine and fuel controls as a system to gain the greatest emission reductions.
Doosan Portable Power has successfully integrated Cummins’ 6.7 and 9 liter engines into its product array, and continues to work on the 4.5 liter integration. The depth and breadth of the Cummins product line was just one factor in Doosan’s choice of suppliers. According to George Iarca, Cummins’ North America Engine Sales and Marketing Manager, “The technology and quality of our product was a deciding factor in Doosan’s decision. Meeting stringent emission requirements and providing a seamless transition for customers have been challenging for both engine and equipment manufacturers. Yet, our engine technology allows us to meet the emission requirements, while still providing an efficient, robust and reliable solution.”
Doosan Infracore, parent company of Doosan Portable Power, headquartered in Seoul, South Korea is one of the top seven construction equipment manufacturers in the world. It offers a comprehensive range of products that support mining, drilling, entertainment, industrial, and construction market segments. The Doosan Portable Power product portfolio, acquired from Ingersoll Rand in 2007, includes portable air compressors, light towers, light compaction products, as well as mobile generators. Doosan has a combined network of more than 3,500 dealers worldwide and 20 manufacturing plants in the US, Europe and China.
“The overall Cummins value package proved to be the best solution for Doosan Portable Power,” added Iarca. “Part of the package includes 24/7 access to high-quality product support which is a compelling advantage. We are delighted Doosan chose Cummins Engine to help them meet their interim and final Tier 4 needs.”
Local distributor, Cummins Atlantic, played an integral role in orchestrating the sale to Doosan. In characterizing the relationship, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Phillip Bush noted, “Doosan has been an excellent customer for us and it’s a privilege to have the opportunity to work with their portable generator products. The quality of their people and their culture are a good match with Cummins and we appreciate the fact that they hold suppliers, like Cummins, to very high standards.”
